After being stateside for a relatively short period of time, I have found that many people up here are in a constant state of fear. Fear of economic calamity, fear of the future and fear of each other have caused many to lose sight of what really matters in life. There was once a time very much like the one we are currently facing when a great man said, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. We must not let fear get the best of us.
The comment I constantly hear that really motivates me to do what I do is when people say, “I could never move abroad”. I find myself asking, why couldn’t you. It is something that literally anyone can do.
Concerns I hear usually involve money, safety and fear of the unknown. I am here to tell you to fear not.
They say that money should never be the determining factor when choosing a new job. Traveling abroad not only gives you a priceless experience but it will also allow you to live more comfortably than you may think. The thing that blows my mind is how people fail to recognize the high cost of living in a country like the U.S. Just add up all of your monthly expenses without leaving out the occasional inflated parking ticket or iphone screen replacement to see that you probably spend an insane amount of money on overpriced and in some cases unnecessary things. Why not go to a simpler place where many of these
expenses may not exist?
“Speculation is the enemy of calm”. It is common for us to materialize danger simply by thinking that it exists. If you look for danger it will find you as certain as walking into a fire will burn you. Living life
fearing what’s around every corner is no way to live. We must enjoy this beautiful world that we’ve had the amazing opportunity to live in. It is a crime that people out there don’t take the time to travel and appreciate what’s around them. Don’t put it off, get out there and see what it’s all about. Why
not see the world?
It is natural to fear what’s beyond the fence. When I left my yard to play in the street, the street seemed scary. When I left my block to go to school, the school seemed scary. Do you see where I am going with this? Anything we don’t know is always going to seem scary at first but after some time it becomes familiar and comfortable. Right now, leaving your country to go beyond the border may seem scary but that is only temporary. Think of the most important decisions you’ve made thus far in life. How did you feel when you
made them? My guess is that at any of those moments, there were butterflies swarming around your stomach. That is natural and usually the mark that you are taking and important step forward. Why not embrace the unknown?
There will always be reasons why not to move abroad. Now that the economy is bad, the excuse people make is that it’s a money thing. When the economy is good, people say its the hesitation to leave their job that keeps them planted. The excuses will always be there and fear will always make them the most attractive thought line. Don’t give in to it. Why not make the decision to change your life?
